Golf on the Vaal – Parys to Vereeniging! (July/August 2011 edition)
It’s approximately a 55 kilometer drive between Parys and Vereeniging and there are no fewer than five golf courses along this stretch of the Vaal River, there is also a mashie course and a new 18 – hole course being developed. The area itself is less than an hour’s drive from Johannesburg and is the ideal golfing getaway for stressed Gauteng residents in need of a break!
Parys is the gateway to the Vredefort Dome (the largest and oldest meteorite impact site in the world) an area that has been awarded World Heritage Site status. The town was named by the town’s German surveyor, who named it after Paris, France, due to the similarity between the Vaal River and the River Seine, which flows through Paris. Vaal de Grace Golf Estate and Parys Golf & Country Estate lie on the banks of the Vaal River here.
Further up the river in the town of Vanderbijlpark lies the Emfuleni Golf Estate, whilst Riviera on Vaal Hotel & Country Club is found on the northern side of the river and Maccauvlei Golf Club on the southern side of the river some 15 kilometers further along in Vereeniging.
Wonderful golf courses, excellent accommodation, fine restaurants, interesting shops and activities such as white water rafting, mountain biking, hiking, fishing etc combine to make this the ideal destination for all.
