Meyer wins South to East

Breyten Meyer signed for a seven-under-par 65 final round to take his total to 13-under and win the South to East Challenge co-sanctioned by the Big Easy Tour and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Tour at Ebotse Links on Friday.

Trailing by a shot going into a delayed third round in Benoni, Meyer opened his final round with pars on the first and second holes before he made birdie on third. Then, an unwanted bogey on the fourth hole got into his card but that was quickly made up for when he made consecutive birdies on five, six and seven.

The back nine proved to be smooth-sailing as Meyer continued to fire in birdies and pars en route to his maiden victory on the BET circuit.

“I started quite badly today,” he said. “The greens were frozen and (we) delayed for an hour. I actually hit some bad shots in those first three holes and I phoned my coach afterwards, and he said I should go through my routines; warm up again and basically start over,” said Meyer after the round.

“So, that also kind of got the baggage out of the way now,” Meyer said, “and I saw Herman (Loubser) was now in the lead and I could come from behind. I knew I was playing well so I just had to be patient through the rest of the day.”

That the conversation with the coach and the patience he speaks of seems to have done the trick because Meyer began to pull away from Herman Loubser. “I just stuck to my routines and I knew that mentally I was going through my routines very well, so I just stuck to that,” said Meyer. While Loubser put up a gallant fight through the last two rounds, as evidenced by his final nine-under-par 207 finish for second, the four shots lead that Meyer had established proved difficult to cut down.
