SUNSHINE TOUR Players Social Responsibility Initiative

While their Sunshine Tour peers were busy trying to come to grips with the difficulties posed by the Gary Player Country Club in the opening round of the Sun City Challenge, three players took a drive to the nearby Moses Kotane Hospital.

Steven Ferreira, Heinrich Bruiners and Jaco Prinsloo spent some time with young children in the paediatric ward of the facility. The visit represented the first effort in an initiative devised by the Sunshine Tour players’ representatives and the Tour’s communications department to start giving a little back to communities around courses they visit.

Many of the players on the Tour are already fathers, and if they’re not, many of them are going to be fathers one day, and if they can give the kids in hospitals a reason for even a small smile, the initiative will have proved worthwhile.

Ferreira, Bruiners and Prinsloo brought along some golf balls and gloves to autograph and give to the kids, many of whom were too small to understand what golf might be about. But they were all happy to get something to play with, and, when they got over their shyness, they were happy to smile with their visitors and pose for pictures.

The staff on the ward – who had been helping the kids eat their lunch when the players arrived for the visit – were also pleased to see the kids interact with the pros, and were also delighted to get some basic advice on gripping a club.

With the ice having been broken with this first visit, the Tour will try to visit a hospital near every course they visit in future.
