In an awards programme that celebrates world-class golf destinations, Pinnacle Point Estate has been voted South Africa’s Best Golf Course. This is the second year in a row that the golfing gem of the Garden Route has taken top honours at the Annual World Golf Awards.

The World Golf Awards serves to celebrate and reward excellence in golf tourism, world class courses and golf destinations. Now in its fourth year, the World Golf Awards is considered the most prestigious awards programme in the golf tourism industry. Hundreds of thousands of ballots were cast ahead of the gala ceremony, which took place at Spain’s La Manga Club on Saturday, 25 November 2017.

“To be internationally recognised as the golfing destination in South Africa for the second year in a row is a huge honour,” comments Carl van der Linde, General Manager of Pinnacle Point Estate.

Votes were cast online by professionals working within the golf travel and tourism industry – senior executives, travel buyers, tour operators, agents and media professionals, as well as golf tourism consumers (the public). The voting worked on a first-past-the-post system to ensure impartiality and independence.

Over and above celebrating excellence, the awards programme strives to stimulate the international golf tourism market and raise the golf tourist customer experience. The 2017 World Golf Awards focused on the leading 130 nations who are shaping the future of this dynamic industry. Morocco was declared Africa’s Best Golf Destination, ahead of South Africa, Egypt and Kenya. In the overall rankings for this year, Portugal was declared the World’s Best Golf Destination for the fourth year in a row, with St Andrews Links - Old Course in Scotland named the World’s Best Golf Course, celebrating the number 1 world ranking since the inception of the World Golf Awards in 2014.

Pinnacle Point Estate went up against 24 of South Africa’s best golf courses, including Steyn City, Fancourt (Montagu) and Pearl Valley, before claiming the prestigious title for the second year in a row. “Golfers are spoilt for choice when it comes to quality golf courses in beautiful settings here in South Africa, so to be declared the best of the best is high praise indeed,” says Pinnacle Point Estate’s Golf Director, Nic Grundtvig.

Pinnacle Point’s 18-hole links golf course was designed by the renowned Peter Matkovich with 2011 Open Champion, Darren Clarke. Pinnacle Point is also home to 2010 Open Champion, Louis Oosthuizen’s golfing development programme, the Louis57 Junior Golf Academy.

“Credit must be given to Nic Grundtvig and his green keeping team, as well as Turfworks, Pinnacle Point’s turf management company who maintain the award-winning fairways and greens, for all the hard work they put in to maintaining our golf course and ensuring that players enjoy a golfing experience on par with other award-winning golfing destinations around the world,” adds van der Linde.

Last year, Pinnacle Point completed a number of new developments as part of its 10-year anniversary celebration, including a revamp of the existing clubhouse, pro shop and restaurant, and construction of a new golf cart barn, function venue and wellness centre. “Our facilities are first-rate, the views from every tee sensational and the golfing experience exceptional,” says Grundtvig.

With two World Golf Awards in the bag, it is easy to see why Pinnacle Point has earned its reputation as one of the bucket list golf courses of the world. “We look forward to welcoming many more local and international visitors to Pinnacle Point soon,” says van der Linde, “and giving them one of the most exhilarating golfing experiences of their lives at the certified best golf course in South Africa!”
